Nano@home is an open source project, as much as it is a science project, to help advance nanotechnology. Specifically it is set up to help in the design of nanometer-sized molecular machines that will make it feasible to manufacture just about anything that is possible within the constraints of the laws of nature. The process of building stuff with nanomachines is also called "Molecular Manufacturing" and is the ultimate goal of nanotechnology. Nanomachines will build with atomic precision and with an efficiency that we can only dream of at present. We will be able to produce new materials, faster and smaller computers, better and more efficient running appliances and other consumer products... Nanomachines will also be able to repair stuff. They will be so small that they can work inside your body repairing cuts and bruises and broken bones, fending off viruses and bacteria by attacking and killing them. They would probably be able to defeat cancer and perhaps even aging.

You can help bring about this bright future by joining us in the development of the software needed to design the nanoparts to build those nanomachines. Later, when the software becomes available, you will have the opportunity to design nanoparts yourself or with the help of your friends and neighbours. We will make sure that you will get the credits for your designs. Not only will the software be open source, the nanopart designs residing in our database at nano@home will be freely available to anyone.
